The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on December 4 that its security forces and the U.S.-led coalition had arrested a prominent smuggler working for ISIS in northeast Syria.

In an official statement, the Kurdish-led group identified the smuggler as Shawaysh Sattam Saud al-Airash, revealing that he was apprehended in the town of Dashisha in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside.

“He [the smuggler] is known to be part of a larger smuggler network and have links with ISIS members. This network smuggles fighters from al-Hawl Camp to Iraq,” the statement reads.

The SDF released photos showing a scene from the operation that led to the arrest of al-Airash and communication devices seized from the smuggler’s hideout.

Tens of thousands of ISIS fighters’ relatives and affiliates, mainly foreigners, are being held in the al-Hawl camp, which is located in the eastern countryside of al-Hasakah. The SDF’s security forces are running the camp with support from the U.S.-led coalition.

Despite these measures, many suspects managed to escape from al-Hawl with the help of smugglers like al-Airash. In most cases, the final destination of these suspects is Turkish-occupied areas in northern Aleppo, or Iraq.
